Meet the Creators

Jean Metcalf

I taught myself to paint while waiting for my novel to write itself. This was in the mid-eighties, after a determined move to New York City to be an artist. I painted from my vast collection of stray animals, the muses, I found, adopted, and adored. The stories told themselves to me, effortlessly, and painting was the most compelling and least judgmental way to express them.
My hope as an artist is for the viewer to enjoy what they see. The animal kingdom is where my inspiration and soul resides; in each animal alive there is a potential portrait, story, reason to be observed and remembered.

I’ve always understood the world best by listening to the sound it makes, sometimes that’s all that makes sense.  I taught myself to play music when I was fourteen, realizing a few years later that making up ditties was the thing I wanted to do in this life. I played and recorded with multiple artists, bands, and projects and got older along the way.  Now, I live on a farm in the Arkansas Ozarks with my wonderful wife, three amazing children, and many animals.  Sound is still very important to me.
